Day 02:
Day Two - Full day at Ol Pejeta Conservancy - Breakfast Lunch & Dinner

Breakfast in the hotel and depart for full day game drive at Olpjeta Conservancy best known for Chimpanzee and the late Sudan Rhino.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a 364sq km wildlife conservancy situated between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares and its game-to-area ratio tops the Kenyan park and reserve league. Ol Pejeta has over 10000 large mammals and it is the only park where the big 5 (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard) and chimpanzees can be seen. It is also where the fastest growing population of rhino in Africa can be found. There are southern white rhino, about 80 endangered black rhino and in a special sanctuary there are two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhino.

Safari by vehicle is not the only option at Ol Pejeta. Safari game walks, horse rides and even camel rides are available, as are nocturnal game drives.

Since being established in 1988 Ol Pejeta has had a colourful list of previous owners including Lord Delamere, an early and influential settler from Britain, shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis’ father Roussel and the arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. It was set up originally as a cattle ranch but herds of migrating elephant regularly destroyed the fenced enclosures making intensive cattle farming impracticable. Cattle still plays a role in Ol Pejeta today but as a managed livestock within the conservancy and is used to maximise the bio-diversity of the land making Ol Pejeta an integrated wildlife and livestock area.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary: Formed in 1993 as a joint alliance between The Jane Goodall Institute and Kenyan Wildlife Services this sanctuary was established as a refuge for orphaned and confiscated chimpanzees and is the only place in Kenya where non-indigenous chimpanzees can be seen. The Sanctuary provides a permanent refuge in as natural environment as possible – the 40 or so chimpanzees are protected on an island and access to see them is by boat.

What are the Banking and Currency arrangements in Kenya

Currency
The preferred currency is $US

Banking
Banks are found only in large towns, and are generally open from 09h00 to 15h30 on weekdays and 08h30 to 11h00 on Saturdays (Closed Sundays and Public Holidays). Some of them offer foreign exchange services – with cash, bank & credit cards as well as travellers cheques. You can also obtain cash from automatic teller machines (ATMs). Several international banks have branches in the main city centres. Always advise your bank that you are travelling outside of the country as they might block your purchases if they are not informed.

What is the Travel, Transport and Getting Around Situation?

Getting around Kenya is easy once you know your options. Flying, getting a car hire, using the train system, taking a taxi or experiencing Kenya’s popular public transport system are all viable options for your Kenya travel.

What advice could you give us about Food Drink and the Cuisine ?

Kenya : The Kenyan culinary tradition has generally emphasised feeding the masses as efficiently as possible, with little room for flair or innovation. Most meals are centred on ugali, a thick, dough-like mass made from maize and/or cassava flour. While traditional fare may be bland but filling, there are some treats to be found. Many memorable eating experiences in Kenya are likely to revolve around dining al fresco in a safari camp, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the African bush.

The Basics
Kenya has thoroughly Kenyan street food up to fine-dining restaurants that draw on African and wider international influences.

Restaurants Plenty of fine dining restaurants in Nairobi and, to a lesser extent, along the coast with more limited options in provincial towns elsewhere. Most hotels have a restaurant of some sort.
Lodges & Tented Camps These stars of Kenya’s accommodation scene often have culinary offerings to match.
Hotels/Hotelis Cheap (usually) roadside restaurants that serve a predominantly local clientele with simple staples.
Nyama Choma Wildly popular places serving barbecued meats; you choose the cut and wait for it to be prepared.

What is the Climate Like ?

The climate of Kenya varies by location, from mostly cool every day, to always warm/hot. The climate along the coast is tropical. This means rainfall and temperatures are higher throughout the year. At the coastal cities, Mombasa, Lamu and Malindi, the air changes from cool to hot, almost every day.

What sort of clothing should I bring?

When it comes to clothing, you need to take extra caution as Kenya & Tanzania often exhibits unpredictable weather patterns. Here’s a basic guide of the kind of weather to expect at certain times of the month.

January- mid March: Most parts of the country are hot and dry. Light dressing would be appropriate. You can however carry moderate clothing for the cold nights.

Mid-march-June: Most parts of the country are experiencing the long rains, but the weather is warm. Carry warm clothing.

June-mid October: Fairly hot. The plains are green and it is a good time to explore. Carry a mix of light and warm clothing as the temperatures drop drastically in the evening and nights.

Mid-October-December: Short rains. Most parts of the country are fairly cold and wet. It would be in order to carry warm and light clothes.

A point to observe is that in the major Kenya cities, most people appreciate contemporary culture and don’t place too much emphasis on dressing. In the rural areas however, because of the reserved African culture, there still exist prejudice towards women dressing in excessively short skirts, short dresses or shorts and pants.

Business suits and business casual for men and ladies is the accepted wear if travelling to Kenya on business.

What are the Electrical and Plug Standards

We just wanted to say thank you for such a great holiday. We had a tremendous time. I suspect you've already been told about Super Saturday, but we had a great time every day; lots of variety and very busy viewing. The group got on well and I think we all enjoyed it. We had lots of fun with Ian ensuring that he caught the front legs of lions in the correct  Kathryn position. The guide - Sam - was excellent. He really loved Super Saturday and will spend for ever telling his mates about it. He was on a huge roll!

First of all, thank you so much for taking on board our requirements and bolting this trip together. Your detail investigating Okakambe and the golf course is greatly appreciated. We have had a truly memorable time. I can’t believe we started planning this trip over a year ago and now we have done it! Cornerstone: David and Peter had a fun game of golf. A perfect start to the trip (and easy to find). Okakambe: I know I mailed about this but Eddi, Kathrin, the horses and everyone who looked after me made a lasting impression. Erongo: A perfect peaceful place for us to settle into the trip after my riding etc. The trails are a great way to explore. Okaukuejo: Amazing! We did have some fantastic game sightings from here. Namutoni: On the way here we had great sightings of a family of 13 elephants and much more. This end of the pan seemed greener and offered more opportunities for us. Okonjima: This place is a haven and captivating. The enthusiasm of the guides and people are an inspiration. We watched a pangolin being tagged one night and saw three white rhino whilst hiding behind a bush on foot!

We have been customers of Your Safari before and enjoyed a fantastic experience in Namibia, so when the opportunity came to take a tour with them to India on the quest for wild tigers, we jumped at it. Again the experience was fantastic. In conjunction with local guides we had a fantastic two weeks, taking in the cultural melting pot of Delhi, the elegance of Jaipur - including the imposing Amer Palace and the breath-taking majesty of the Taj Mahal. But of course the prime reason for the tour was the safari drives in the National Parks and this did not disappoint. We had excellent sightings of tigers in all three parks that we visited and took some great photographs. But there was so much more to see than tigers and we spent time in the forests observing the deer, the magnificent Gaur (largest bovines in the world), the fascinating behaviors of the Langur Monkeys and birds of all varieties, including eagles and vultures. As a special bonus, we also had sightings of the elusive Sloth Bear. India is an incredible country and you have to embrace the organised chaos at times. But the people are fantastic and friendly and we felt very safe throughout. All in all, another wonderful experience from Your Safari. (and next stop for us a self drive tour of British Columbia, arranged of course by... Your Safari.

We have had a fantastic trip, saw tons of wildlife and just wanted to say a big thank you for all your help. The baby in the zebra pic had been born on the road less than five minutes before we got there and Bob took this as it got up for the first time. One and a half hours later we saw it running with its mum to catch up to the herd. Magic! There were about 30 of these elephants at the water hole just as we arrived at Okaucuejo – they even came back for another show the next night - a bit before the two rhinos were squaring up for a tussle. We have so many great memories and are just getting 360, (of the 1500+ total we took), printed to make up an album. We absolutely loved walking at both Etendeka and Okonjima. We never thought you could get so close to a cheetah without being eaten alive!!! Bob got some lovely pictures of very relaxed cats! We are saving our pennies so we can go and do it all again.

After a year and a half of planning and building excitement we finally had our safari this November. It was everything and more than what we expected. From the initial contact with Kathryn, through all the planning, to the safari itself, everything went very smoothly, the accommodations were above and beyond , each one unique and interesting. We couldn't wait for the end of the day to see where we would be next! We toured Namibia plus did an animal safari which will be one of the highlights of our lives. To see wild beasts in their natural environment is truly something to treasure and appreciate. Our guides John and Jules Birch were so helpful from the minute they picked us up until they deposited us at our flight home . John's help and hints with photos enabled us to get some really great shots , his knowledge of the animals and their habits was invaluable in sightings. He and Jules were very caring and we had a lot of fun and laughs, we left as life time friends. I purchased a pair of small binoculars before we left and so happy I did. If you don't mind getting dirty, love adventure and fun and want a small group of people on your trip this is the company for you. When we return to Africa we will definitely be using Your Safari again
