World Lion Day
Saturday 10th August was World Lion Day. Where top conservationists discuss all things lion, and indeed are Celebrating Lions.
This iconic African predator is in trouble. With lion numbers declining by 43% over the last 2 decades. There are now only an estimated 20,000 remaining in the entire continent.
Habitat loss, bush-meat poaching and conflict with livestock owners are the main reasons for this decline.
In Namibia they are Celebrating Lions, we have an estimated 1,000+ lions nearly half of which live in Etosha National Park. These are thought to be the most genetically pure lions in Africa, therefore essential to the entire species.
We also have some of Africa’s top conservationists in Namibia. Who work tirelessly to resolve the conflict between local communities and these magnificent carnivores. Tammy Hoth-Hanssen from “Africat North” is a pioneer in this field. See her story here
